February this year, Yityish Aynaw was crowned Miss Israel 2013. Yityish is the first ever black Miss Israel.

Yityish, 21, was born in Ethiopia and made aliyah (immigrated to Israel) with her family when she was 12. She served as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces.
There have been a differing opinion in USA’s black community on Miss Aynaw’s achievement. Some see it as a triumph in a country where black people are a minority, and a sign that racism is waning in many country. Some in black community have seen this differently. They think this is just a PR stunt by state of Israel to mask it’s horrific record on racism. They choose this black girl as a token so they can say “look! We have a black Miss Israel… We’re not racist!.” Below are some of the comments from black folks:

This was a fix to make yourselves look good to the rest of the world, Israel.
